Paris Fashion Week

Paris has been in the media spotlight this month as fashion made a triumphant return to the French capital for the annual Paris Fashion Week. Fashion houses in attendance included Christian Dior, Chanel, Versace and Armani, all eager to show their spring-summer designs on the catwalk. Luxisto rounds up the best of the action in Paris.

Christian Dior

First up on Monday was Raf Simons with his latest designs at the Dior couture show, featuring layered sequins, lace and tulle with original colour schemes. The models strutted the catwalk in bright vinyl pumps to a David Bowie soundtrack. The music was a hint of Dior's future direction, focusing on a blend of  psychedelic and futuristic, with heavy influences from the '50, '60s and '70s. Speaking at the show, Simons said “the romance of a near past, when space-age and mind-expanding ideas of a future felt full of possibilities for society, pop culture and fashion.”

Chanel

The following day, the Chanel catwalk was grabbing the headlines from inside a giant terrarium. Karl Lagerfeld presented a 73-piece collection to wow the watching spectators. There were bare abdomens, tweed suits and tulle headwear. "The new cleavage is the stomach" Lagerfeld said of his spring-summer 2015 designs. Colour scheme extended from pale pastel tones to bright electric blue and yellow.

Versace

While other haute couture designers opted for multi-layered designs, Versace offered a refreshingly simple alternative with its 2015 spring-summer collection. Figure hugging dresses, transparent cut-outs and slinky shapes showed plenty of leg, shoulder and hip in what was a classy take on sexy women's wear. The colours were equally bold as the cuts. Commenting on the new collection, 59-year-old Italian designer Donatella Versace said “I wanted no straight lines at all. Every seam is curved."

Armani Prive

On Wednesday, the Armani Privé collection took to the catwalk under the careful gaze of onlooking Hollywood actors and actresses. 68-pieces were exhibited with a distinct oriental influence. Delicate clothing was the theme with silk and beaded materials draped over slinky silhouettes. This theme was offset by markedly large accessories.

In other news, Kim Kardashian appeared in 13 different outfits during her stay in Paris for the fashion week. Sporting a new blonde hairstyle, Kim was keen to be seen in black. Perhaps the biggest story of the week was Ben Stiller and Owen Wilsons' surprise appearance at the show as their fashionista Zoolander alter-egos Derek Zoolander and Hansel. Finally, Apple watches appeared for an exclusive Paris fashion week exhibition in high retail store Colette near the Louvre. The display event marked the first time that the watch had been put on public viewing outside of an invite-only event and welcomed VIP guests Karl Lagerfeld and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

The Brightest Star

STAR 1
Star is the latest superyacht design that promises to set the yachting world alight. The brainchild of yacht designer Igor Lobanov, and engineering and design collaborators BMT Nigel Gee and Alex Malybaev, Star is intended to blow conventional yacht architecture out of the water with its non-conformist design.
STAR 2
To that effect, many yacht industry professionals have complained of the stagnant nature of yacht designs when compared to other luxury sector goods such as supercars and building constructions. Lobanov agrees, stating that “Alex (Malybaev) and I exchanged some thoughts about yachting and came to the conclusion that to those outside the marine industry, all yachts look the same: It seems that modern architecture, product design and car design have no influence on yachts,” said Lobanov. There has been a noticeable reaction to this revelation, leading to an upsurge in creative yacht structures as Lesiure & Luxury reported in Sepetember. The likes of award winning architect Zaha Hadid has since attempted her first superyacht: a neo-futuristic mesh design.
STAR 6
Star is expected to measure 132 metres long and 60 metres high with its interior rooms and living spaces equalling 37,000 sq ft. Luxury features include an underwater viewing gallery at the depths of the ship’s hull, connected by lift to another viewing platform on the eighth deck. Star also features all electric architecture and fully azimuthing propulsion, meaning improved maneuvarabillity and the absence of rudders. The vessel’s maximum speed is 18+kts, with a range of 14kts of 5000+NM.
STAR 3
While Star has come under criticism by some for lacking unshaded outdoor deck space, the team’s designers have still managed to find room for a helipad. Any criticism to that regard however has been swiftly washed over as the superyacht’s stunning design continues to attract widespread acclaim. As its name suggests, the superyacht resembles the top half of a star and has an elegant lattice exterior akin to a snowflake.
STAR 7
BMT yacht design director James Roy, was keen to emphasise the importance of technological advances as the key factor responsible for Star’s unusual design. “STAR is a tangible view of a 21st century interpretation of art and science,” he said. “We are fortunate to live in an era where technology makes the delivery of bolder designs more possible”.

Is This the World’s Most Expensive Apartment?

We already know that the Monaco luxury real estate market is extremely unique, with Monaco property commanding a higher price per metre than anywhere else in the world.

Research released earlier this year, revealed that the buying price per metre for Monaco property was more than €41,000, in comparison to €25,000 for the world’s next most expensive city, London.

But these prices were dulled into insignificance last month when it was revealed that the penthouse of the Odeon Tower, currently being built overlooking Larvotto Plage in Monte-Carlo, has a price tag of €300 million.

This price is expected to make the five-floor penthouse the most expensive apartment in the world.

So what will the lucky purchaser get for his euro? The multi-storey apartment sits at the top of the first skyscraper to be built in the Principality since the 1980s, when its’ then ruler Prince Rainier, banned the construction of tall buildings over worries they were damaging Monaco’s character.

However, this ban was overturned by Monaco’s current ruler Prince Albert II in 2009, when the ambitious project to construct the 560ft tower just seconds from the water’s edge was given the green light.

The Odeon Tower’s penthouse is without any doubt the most coveted address within the new apartment block, boasting five palatial bedrooms, a kitchen on each floor, and its own fully equipped health centre.

The piece de resistance has certainly caught the imagination of the world’s press with its gigantic infinity pool, which can be reached by a slide from the balcony above.

Each room in the penthouse, which sits on the 45th to 49th level of the skyscraper, has floor to ceiling windows, and enjoys unparalleled views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding sites of Monaco. The interiors have been designed by award-winning designer Albert Pinto, with a contemporary look inspired by lead architect Alexandre Giraldi, who has designed some of the finest luxury properties in Monaco.

The penthouse also boasts a private home-cinema, sauna and a state-of-the-art home business centre.

The Ultimate Underwater Luxury

Opened in 2011 by the founder of Red Bull, Dietrich Mateschitz, Laucala Island in Fiji is essentially a millionaire’s playground. The 3,200 acre island, which can only be reached by sea or by private jet, boasts expansive beaches with all the watersports equipment you could possibly imagine, stables and an 18 hole golf course all of which is shared by just 25 luxury villas. Now they must share a new luxury: a private submarine.
The DeepFlight Super Falcon is the world’s first resort based submersible and is perfect for venturing the clear blue waters of the South Pacific. The DeepFlight Super Falcon allows its users to get up close and personal to the enchanting coral reefs around the island like never before.

The submersible is a product of San Francisco’s Hawkes Ocean Technologies, previously suppliers of underwater technology to Hollywood film director James Cameron among others. With its two wings and two transparent domed cock pits, providing 360 degree views, the DeepFlight Super Falcon is more reminiscent of a plane than a submarine. The intention is to design a submersible that flies rather than ascends and descends. Such an extraordinary experience has interested some of the world’s wealthiest people, including Sir Richard Branson and Maeteschitz himself.
Laucala is the first resort to offer personal submarine experiences for its guests. Laucala Island’s General Manager Andrew Thomson, commenting on the arrival of the DeepFlight Super Falcon, said “we look forward to offering yet another exclusive and authentic experience to our guests with the new submersible.”

Plans for another exclusive deep sea submersible are already well under way with the DeepFlight Dragon also about to be launched in Laucala. Creators of the Dragon have called it "the lightest and most compact personal submarine for the superyacht and tourism markets" and have also pointed out that it is "the only personal submarine that uses solely vertical thrust to dive, enabling both flight and hover". Like all DeepFlight craft, the Dragon is positively buoyant, meaning it will automatically float back to the surface. Additionally, DeepFlight Dragon is the only personal submarine with a built-in Dive Manager which monitors all critical functions of the sub, which essentially enables easy self-piloting and eliminates the need for a professional pilot in a third seat.
Before getting too excited however, any interested parties had better beware. A trip in the submersible is not included in the island resort’s generous all-inclusive rates and so an hour’s trip can cost up to $2,000. With so much marine wildlife to explore however and with such a unique diving experience to be had, this may be $2,000 well spent.
